Gender-based violence remains a menace

RUNDU – A mentally-ill woman has been raped and murdered in the KAVANGO EAST Region of Northern NAMIBIA.

Police in the area have identified the deceased 24-year-old WAYERA PETRINA HAIPOPO from NYONDO Village, 90 kilometres east of the provincial capital, RUNDU.

KAVANGO EAST Crime Investigations Coordinator BONIFATIUS KANYETU says the late Ms HAIPOPO was mentally unwell and used to wander from place to place.

He says a passer-by discovered the naked body of the deceased dumped in the bush two days ago, and investigators have identified body marks showing she was raped before the murder.

Deputy Commissioner KANYETU says they are questioning a number of suspects in connection with her killing, but no one has been charged yet.

The law-enforcement agent has further appealed to members of the public who know the movements of the late Ms HAIPOPO prior to the murder to contact the police.

The killing of the 24-year-old mentally disturbed woman brings to TWO the number of women murdered in a short space of time in the area.

NBC News says police dug up the remains of 26-year-old MUROTUA MBETJIUA last month, and they have charged her boyfriend CASTRO DOMINGO with her murder.

Gender-based violence is a major problem in NAMIBIA, where the government in 2014 had to declare a National Day of Prayer against the murder of women – mostly by their sexual partners./Sabanews/cam
